Restless Leg Syndrome Summary

People often ignore the pain in their feet considering it as normal pain. However, every time it is not just the pain of minor fatigue. If you feel muscle strain and vibration along with pain, then it can be a serious problem. In medical term it is called restless leg syndrome. If it is not treated at the right time, it can turn into a problem called Parkinson’s.

Due to changes and imbalance in hormones in the body, such symptoms are seen in a person’s body. This problem is seen more in people who are suffering from high blood pressure. Sometimes restless leg syndrome also occurs due to genetic reasons. Apart from this, this problem is also seen due to deficiency of iron and vitamin B-12.

Symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome

When a person has restless leg syndrome, he always feels like something is crawling on his legs. Along with this, moving the legs provides relief. Insomnia is a common symptom of this condition. This sort of pain is accompanied by discomfort and muscular strain, two indications of restless leg syndrome.

Restless legs syndrome is distinguished by a pronounced inclination to engage in leg movement, accompanied by unpleasant sensations experienced in the arms, legs, chest, and face.

Restless legs syndrome has been seen to manifest in individuals via a diverse range of feelings, including several categories:

  • Tingling, burning, itching, throbbing
  • A kind of creeping desire
  • Feeling like water mixed with gas in the arteries of the legs.
  • Shin or foot cramps
  • These uncomfortable sensations may be relieved by moving or rubbing the feet; they may range from mild to unbearable and may become worse during the evening or night.
  • Some people may have symptoms occasionally, while others may have them every day. This can make it difficult to sit still for very long periods of time, such as on a long train journey.
  • Up to half of people with restless legs syndrome may experience lower back pain.

Restless legs syndrome causes

Genetics:  Restless leg syndrome is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner and may run in families.

Deficiency: Iron deficiency may worsen this condition because low iron levels in the blood produce a reduction in dopamine generation in the brain. Aside from that, folate and magnesium deficiencies might contribute to the condition.

Kidney diseases: Restless leg syndrome is attributed to alterations in chemical equilibrium during the terminal phase of renal illness, specifically in the context of haemodialysis.

Medications: The origin of this illness may be ascribed to the use of a substantial percentage of pharmacological agents including antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants.

Diseases: ADHD, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis have all been associated to restless leg syndrome. Possible in the latter stages of pregnancy. After giving delivery, these symptoms go away.
